Solemn Novena 2015

June 2015

Dear Friend of Saint Ann’s,

A very long winter has finally come to an end and we are beginning to warm up for the summer.  Here at Saint Ann’s, when things
begin to warm up, we think Solemn Novena to Saint Ann.  We are well into our preparations for the celebration of our 91st Solemn
Novena to Saint Ann.

Our preachers, Fr. Lee Havey, C.P. and Fr. Chris Cleary, C.P. – both vocation directors for our Passionist Community – are ready,
our confessors have been contacted and our employees are preparing our property and beautiful Basilica for all of you to come
and be with us in prayer.

We are firm believers in the power of intercessory prayer.  We look to Saint Ann to be our companion and our support as we turn
to God in our continuing needs, the needs of our families, the needs of our world and the needs of our church.  And so we spend
these special 9 days of preparation for the Feast of Saint Ann by listening to God’s word, by our participation in the sacramental
life of our faith and by placing our petitions in the hands of Saint Ann.

I invite you to begin preparation yourselves for our novena experience by sending us your intentions on the enclosed petition slip
along with your offering.  Your intentions will be placed before Saint Ann in the Basilica.  Our Passionist Community, together with
all of you, will be praying for those intentions each and every day.

I hope that you will be able to join us for all or part of the novena right here on our Basilica grounds.  I look forward to seeing you
and praying with you during our Novena from July 17th through July 26th, the Feast Day of Saint Ann.

Through the intercession of Saint Ann, may God bless you in every way.

In Christ’s Passion,

V. Rev. Richard Burke, C.P.
Rector

Lent 2015

Dear Friend of St. Ann,

Our Lenten season has begun.  The imagery of dormant life shown us in our winter weather will give way to the bright promise
of new life when spring and Easter arrive.

The period of penitential practice and prayer is a sacred time for all of us and especially for our Passionist Community here at
St. Ann’s.  We preach Christ crucified as the most eloquent expression of God’s love for us.

I ask your sacrificial giving to St. Ann’s during this Lenten season as we prepare for Easter.  I invite you to send us your prayer intentions on the enclosed intention form along with your Easter donation.  These will be placed on the altar here at St. Ann’s
and will be remembered in a special way during an Easter Novena of Masses beginning Easter Sunday, April 5 and
concluding on Monday, April 13th.

I am most grateful for all of your past support and prayers and count on your continued dedication to St. Ann as we celebrate
her grandson’s Resurrection.

Through the intercession of St. Ann, may God bless you in every way.

In Christ’s Passion,

V. Rev. Richard Burke, C.P.

Winter Fundraiser

Posted by admin - December 29th, 2014

December 2014.

Dear Friends of St. Ann,

Amazingly, we have come to the end of another year.  I pray the Christmas has been a time of grace and blessing for you
and your loved ones. Our prayers for you gain new enthusiasm as we embark upon a new year.  May every blessing be
yours in 2015.

The new year also brings with it the increased fuel bills which will see Saint Ann’s through to the spring time.  You have
been a great and generous blessing to Saint Ann’s and we pray your generosity continues to be rewarded by God’s favor.
To help us meet the winter bills, I invite you to participate in our Valentine’s Day fuel fund-raising drawing.  St. Ann’s
receives much needed help and you have the opportunity to receive a wonderful prize.  Our last first place recipients were
a “young” couple in their nineties who needed the extra help in considering a move to a more comfortable living situation.
They are approaching their 70th wedding anniversary this year.  God provides some wonderful possibilities, doesn’t he?

I am so very grateful for all of your continuing support and especially for your continuing and faith filled devotion to Saint Ann.
Through Her intercession, may God continue to bless you and yours in every possible way.

In Christ’s Passion,

V. Rev. Richard Burke, C.P.

Christmas 2014

Posted by admin - November 24th, 2014

Dear Friend’s of St. Ann’s,

Christmas is such a unique and wonderful mystery which we are privileged to celebrate.  It is so difficult to believe that our God
loves us so intensely that He chooses to become one of us, a human being, in order to convince us of the depth of His Love.

God Became Human in the birth of our Savior!!!

It is this mystery which we celebrate each Christmas.  The feast day festivities focus on divine giving.  God chooses to give us
His Love, God chooses to give us salvation.  God chooses to give us His Son as our Savior.  God chooses to give us divine companionship in our journey of life.  God chooses to give us eternal life.  Christmas celebrates God’s choices to keep giving
His love, His favor, His graces, His blessings, His guidance and His companionship to all of us.

Traditionally, we are invited each Christmas to think as God thinks and to act as God acts, i.e. to be people who choose to give
out of love for God and one another.  Our Passionist community here at St. Ann’s chooses to give to you this Christmas what we
do best – our prayers.  We include you in our Christmas Novena of Masses as a symbol of our gratitude for your generosity
and goodness to St. Ann’s over the years.

We encourage you to fill out the enclosed intention slip with the names of all those you would have us include in our special Christmas Novena of Masses which begins on Christmas Day and concludes on Friday, January 2, 2015.  Please return the
intention slip with your Christmas donation to St. Ann’s by Christmas Day.

During these sacred days of Christmas, you and your intentions will be on our minds and in our hearts and prayers.  May God
who sent His son to be our Savior bless you abundantly this Christmas and throughout the coming year.

Through the intercession of St. Ann, may every Christmas grace and blessing be yours.

In Christ’s Passion,

V. Rev. Richard Burke, C.P.

Solemn Novena 2014

Posted by admin - June 16th, 2014

Dear Friends of St. Anns,

As our very strange and cold winter is moving away, we are getting ready with our plans for the

90th Anniversary of the Solemn Novena in Honor of St. Ann
from July 17th to the Feast Day of St. Ann, July 26th.

In honor of this anniversary, we are building a new outdoor shrine sanctuary for our
outdoor novena devotions. The new sanctuary will be first class, modest and cost efficient. St. Joachim was a hard
working Jewish dad who loved his wife, Ann and cherished his daughter, Mary. We will be honoring the complete
family of St. Ann.

Our preachers are Father Rick Frechette, CP from Haiti and Father Jack Conley, CP from our Western Province.
They are both excellent speakers. Fr. Rick has spent 28 years working with abandoned children in the slums
of Haiti. Fr. Jack has traveled extensively throughout the USA preaching the message of God’s love for all of us.
It should be an exciting and faith-filled 10 days.

Please write your intentions on the slip enclosed and return it to us in the enclosed envelope. They will be
prayed for the the Passionist community during the 10 days of the novena. In memory of St. Ann and
St. Joachim, we are honoring grandparents this year. We have a special prayer card that will be distributed
during the novena.

Each year, the Solemn Novena costs $100,000 to put on for the 10 days. We need your help in this endeavor.
We thank you for your past generosity and presence and ask for your kindness to us again this year.

May God, through the intercession of St. Ann, continue to bless you and your loved ones.

Gratefully
Very Rev. Joseph Jones, C.P.

January 2014

Dear Friends of St. Ann’s,

Allow me to introduce myself, I’m Father Joe the new Rector of St. Ann’s Basilica, Shrine & Community.  I hope this letter finds
you and your family full of peace and thanksgiving to God for giving us another Christmas season to remind us of his love for
us and for his presence and action in the world.

When I witness your struggles and challenges, either with health or finances or simply trying to deal with the unexpected events
of life, I also see your great faith.  The fact that you find God here at St. Ann’s shows that you want your faith to help you to see
clearly amidst the confusion and stress of life.

It is in knowing this that I write to you today with great urgency to ask you to participate in our Winter Fund Raiser which helps us
with our staggering utility bills for the winter.  I know well that many of you face the same challenges.  Along with the letters asking
us to pray for health and peace for your families, there are many letters that come to us each week asking for prayers so families
can pay their bills.

I am asking you to participate in the fund raiser by using the enclosed tickets with a suggested donation of $5.00 per ticket.
If you want any additional tickets for friends and family, please let us know.  We will have the drawing on February 14th, 2014.
You may not think that what you offer goes far, but let me assure you it makes a very big difference.  Your participation in this
is a great gift to us and allows us to operate this sacred place so we can continue to serve you.

On behalf of all the Passionists here at St. Ann’s, may God continue to show his care for you and your family every day as we
continue to celebrate this special Year of Faith.

God bless you.

God’s grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race. . (Titus, 2:11)

Christmas 2013

Dear Friend’s of St. Ann’s,

These words from the second reading for Christmas Midnight Mass is not only a positive and uplifting message, it is also a fact
of our faith.  Despite all of the suffering and many challenges we have witnessed this year in our own lives and in the world, our
faith reveals to us the great gift that we need to celebrate: God’s grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible
for the whole human race.  This special Year of Faith should allow us to truly experience one of the central gifts of this faith, that Jesus Christ; Son of God was born to save us.

We all look for reminders of God’s grace in many ways, and one of those ways is your participation in the life of St. Ann’s Shrine Basilica.  For many of you St. Ann’s has been part of your life for generations, for others St. Ann’s was there at critical times in
your life and in the life of your family.  St. Ann’s stands as a perpetual reminder to us that God’s grace is alive and the salvation
he gives is always there for us to receive and celebrate.

We would like to continue celebrating this gift through our Christmas Novena of Masses.  Beginning on December 25th and continuing to January 2nd the Passionists here at St. Ann’s will celebrate the Christmas Novena of Masses for you and your
loved ones.  Please fill out the intention slip and send it in with your donation so you can participate in this gift of prayer during
the Christmas season.

As we celebrate this special Year of Faith please know that we are grateful for your faith and generosity which is a great
blessing to St. Ann’s.  May God continue to bless you and your family during this time of preparation for the great celebration
of Christmas.

Sincerely,

V. Rev. Joseph R Jones, C.P.

All Souls 2013

Dear Friend’s of St. Ann’s,

One of the most beautiful and timeless traditions in our Catholic faith is the commemoration of our dearly departed on All Souls
Day
.  Each year at this time we remember in a special way not only the memory of our beloved dead, but the communion they
share with us whenever we celebrate the Eucharist.

I invite you to join us here at St. Ann’s in cherishing and remembering these special people who have died and are home with
the Lord by participating in our All Souls Masses during the month of November beginning on Friday, November 2.  Please fill
out the enclosed intention slip and return it with your donation.

In remembering our faithful departed we also remember the special gift of faith they had that still impacts us today and allows
our faith to grow.  As a Passionist community we feel privileged to pray for your departed family members and friends because
those who were part of St. Ann’s in life made this place into a shrine of faith.

May All Souls Day and the prayers for your dearly departed in November renew your faith in the risen Jesus who gave his life for
us so we could have life with him forever.

Sincerely yours in the Passion of Jesus.

Dear Friends of St. Ann,

Allow me to introduce myself, I’m Father Joe the new Rector of St. Ann’s Basilica, Shrine & Community. Our recent
Solemn Novena to St. Ann was very special because of Fr Paul Wierichs, C.P. & Fr Philip Paxton, C.P.  We are grateful
to God for these two fine Passionists who renewed our faith by rejoicing in the gift of the presence of Christ that is ours
in abundance.  The Solemn Novena was also a success because of your devotion to St. Ann and all that happens here
at the Basilica.  I thank you for participating in the Novena and for your generosity.

As we continue to plan for the future work of St. Ann’s I am asking you to participate in our Annual Fall Fundraiser.  Our three
fundraisers are a great blessing to St. Ann’s because they help us to both maintain our beautiful Basilica and property and defray
the huge costs of running such a large plant.

Please return the enclosed tickets stubs with a suggested donation of $5.00 per ticket.  If you would like additional tickets,
please call the Shrine office and request them.  If you are unable to participate please offer a prayer for the Passionist
community here at St. Ann’s that God will give us the grace to continue to serve all of God’s people who seek peace
in this sacred shrine.  Please know that I am very conscious of the many economic challenges that you and your family
face each day as well as the prayers you need during times of illness and moments of suffering and challenge.  All of the Passionists here at St. Ann’s pray for you daily and always appreciate everything you do for this sacred place.  God bless.

89th Annual Solemn Novena to St. Ann:
Year of Faith: Draw Near to God and God will Draw Near to You
July 17-26, 2013

Dear Friends of St. Anns,

It is my great joy to welcome you home to the 89th Annual Solemn Novena to St. Ann, which begins on Wednesday,
July 17th and concludes with the Feast of St. Ann on Friday, July 26th. This time of year was always a special time for my
family growing up as I know it is for yours. Coming to St. Ann’s for the Solemn Novena was part of our life of faith. We
experienced deep faith here and left with our faith strengthened. We came to St. Ann’s because we knew that as people of
faith something special was happening. I am very privileged to invite you to come home and rediscover this gift in this
special Holy Year of Faith through your participation in the Solemn Novena.

We are very fortunate to have two outstanding Passionists to lead our Novena this year: Fr. Paul Wierichs, C.P. and
Fr. Philip Paxton, C.P. Fr. Paul is the Retreat Director of Our Lady of Florida Retreat Center in North Palm Beach, FL.
Fr. Philip is Retreat Director of Holy Name Retreat Center in Detroit, MI. Our preachers have chosen the theme of the Novena
based on the special Year of Faith that we are currently celebrating. Draw Near to God and God will Draw Near to You.
I know that you will enjoy Fr. Paul and Fr. Philip very much.

As Passionists we are very fortunate to have the opportunity to serve you here at St. Ann’s. We have been in Scranton for
100 years but we cannot continue unless we have more young men join us as Passionists and also have the financial
resources to run this large Basilica and plant to provide for your spiritual needs. As you come to the Solemn Novena, I would
ask you to pray for us here at St. Ann’s so we can continue to serve you. And please remember it is at this special place
where faith is celebrated and renewed. I will be waiting to welcome you home in July to celebrate and be renewed.

Through the intercession of Good St. Ann, may God Bless you in every way.

Spring Fund Raiser

April 2013

Dear Friends of St. Ann’s,

After a long winter spring is finally upon us, at least on the calendar! During the winter we lost our beloved Fr. Cassian
who was dedicated to St. Ann’s throughout his entire life. We pray for his eternal peace and thank God for his many
years of service.

As we move into Spring I invite you to participate in our fund-raiser which will take place on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 12th.
We are enclosing 3 tickets and ask that you return them to us in the enclosed envelope along with your donation. Our
Valentines Day winners were Lois M. of Scranton PA, Joanne D. of Uniondale PA, L & J of Scranton PA, Jerry P.
of Scranton PA & John L. of FL. I am most grateful for all of your past support in our drawings and for all of the ways you
support St. Ann’s.

As we pray for each other, and let us also pray for our new Holy Father, Pope Francis. We pray that the Lord will bless him
in a special way as he leads us and God’s people during this important time in the history of the Church.

Thanks again for your dedicated support throughout this past year. Your generosity has made it possible for St. Ann’s to
continue our mission to announce God’s love to all who come here for nourishment and peace.

Lent 2013
Year of Faith

Dear Friends,

I am happy to invite you to participate in our Easter Novena of Masses which will be celebrated for you by the priests of
St. Ann’s Passionist community beginning on Easter Sunday, March 31 to Monday, April 8th.

When we make the announcements every Monday at our weekly Novena we also mention that we as a Passionist
Community always take time to pray specifically for you, our novena clients. It is a reminder that you are never alone
in your prayers and are part of a large community of prayerful support here at St. Ann’s. When I look at the prayer requests
that are sent to us each day it makes me aware that a place like St. Ann’s is so necessary so people like you can have
a sanctuary of prayer and hope as you continue to live your daily life as a follower of Christ. I hope you feel the solidarity
with all those who come here weekly praying for an increase of faith.

As you know St. Ann’s is not exempt from daunting financial hardships. In fact, every month part of my personal intentions
to St. Ann is for us to find ways to pay our monthly bills so we can continue to have the doors open for all of you. So
whatever you can do for us at this time is greatly appreciated. You are always so good to us and I appreciate again your
consideration.

As our Passionist community makes the journey of Lent during this special Year of Faith with you in preparation for the
great feast of Easter, please know that we want to pray for you and your intentions in a special way during the
Easter Novena of Masses. Please return your intentions and enclosed slip in the envelop provided. We are honored
to pray for you because your faith inspires us and gives us hope that the blessings that flow from this place
will last forever.

May the Passion of Jesus strengthen your faith.

Annual Fall Fundraiser

August 2012

Dear Friends of St. Ann,

Our Solemn Novena to St. Ann was very special this year due in large part to our wonderful preachers Fr. Pat Brennan, C.P. &
Fr. Jim O’Shea, C.P.  We are grateful to God for these two fine Passionists who renewed our faith by rejoicing in the gift of the
presence of Christ that is ours in abundance.  The Solemn Novena was also a success because of your devotion to St. Ann
and all that happens here at the Basilica.  I thank you for participating in the Novena and for your generosity.

As we continue to plan for the future work of St. Ann’s I am asking you to participate in our Annual Fall Fundraiser.  Our three
fundraisers are a great blessing to St. Ann’s because they help us to both maintain our beautiful Basilica and property and
defray the huge costs of running such a large plant.  This year since our Passionist Archives have moved to the University of
Scranton we are receiving three beautifully framed pictures of our Passionists who were martyred in China in 1929.  I would
hope to paint and re-carpet the interior of the Shrine corridor so we can have an honorable display of these witnesses of the
gospel.  These funds will also be used to help pay our high utility bills.

Please return the enclosed ticket stubs with a suggested donation of $5.00 per ticket.  If you would like additional tickets,
please call the Shrine office and request them.  If you are unable to participate please offer a prayer for the Passionist
community here at St. Ann’s that God will give us the grace to continue to serve all of God’s people who seek peace in this
sacred shrine.  Please know that I am very conscious of the many economic challenges that you and your family face each
day as well as the prayers you need during times of illness and moments of suffering and challenge.  All of the Passionists
here at St. Ann’s Pray for you daily and always appreciate everything you do for this sacred place.  God Bless.
